Neal Barbour presents Destructure. Destructure is a series of sculptures that all relate to landscapes and human intervention upon them. The clay was made using recycled porcelain mixed with paper pulp, churned into a slurry, poured onto plaster, dried, flipped, dried, rolled thin, sculpted onto armatures (or not) and then high fired to Cone 10. The mix of natural processes and materials with more manufactured processes and materials strives to emulate the subtle coercion humans put onto the land around us. Throughout the sculpting process, the clay would have its own limits and motions, sinking, cracking, dimpling, moving to where it wanted to go—a gentle reminder that what we do to the land around us is impermanent and nature will take itself back left to its own devices. The process of working with clay provides a constant reminder of our link to the natural world. Much like our own selves and surroundings, clay has memory. Each touch is a recorded moment and the clay doesn’t forget no matter how you try to manipulate it. Each one of these structures was pushed to its breaking point whether by forces of hand, pressure, or heat. The strength of the ceramics reflects the greater strength of the earth and its ability to heal from what we enact upon it.

Kim Brook is a Ceramics Artist and Arts Educator at the Lawrence Arts Center. She was born in South Korea, but was raised in New Jersey. Lawrence, Kansas has been Kim’s primary home for the past ten years. Kim discovered clay after a long career in the food industry and now creates her functional work consistently considering how the look and feel of the piece can enhance food presentation and taste. The interiors of her pieces are often a simple glossy white or a matte black as if to frame the meal. The outside and bottom of the pieces, however, highlight Kim’s attention to small details with water etched designs and small hints of color. Cups, plates, and bowls are designed to fit in the human hand with gentle slopes and curving lines.

Artist Name or Exhibition Title * Angie Pickman, David Carter, and Kerry Thonen and music by Darrell Lea
Starting Time 5:00:00 PM
Ending Time 9:00:00 PM
Business Name Phoenix Gallery
Business Website http://www.phoenixgalleryart.com
Business Location 825 Massachusetts
Lawrence, KS 66044
United States

Angie Pickman lives and works as a full-time cut paper artist in Lawrence, Kansas, often operating under the moniker, ‘Rural Pearl.’ Her life philosophy revolves around achieving simplicity, winnowing away at all the things that are not needed so that the individual can be reduced to the rawest, purest being possible. At this level, one is more readily able to truly observe and take in the natural beauty that exists around us. Cutting paper is metaphorical for this—the cutting away of all that is unnecessary to reveal the subject in a simple, bold form. Angie’s tools of trade are a rubber gripped x-acto knife, acid-free paper, mechanical pencils, a self-healing cutting mat, and coffee—for consumption and for a few stains here and there.

Each of David Carter’s pieces are sculpted in multi-media using ceramics, epoxy, fabric, and other materials. Incorporating actual objects with the anthropomorphic characters helps to give them life. They are hand painted with acrylic paints making each one unique. From David: “Even though I am creating animals in clothing, I am attempting to impart true character to them. The last thing I want to do is to make any more sculptures that are simply cute. I have had enough of that to last a lifetime. Most of my little people are not exactly nice, and many are out-and-out criminals. If anything, I would call them anti-cute. Basically most of them are up to no good. They exist in an imaginary world combining Beatrix Potter and Dickens—my own version of Victorian Britain. I try to make each one as a stolen moment in their nefarious lives.”

Kerry Thonen will be in the Vermont St. gallery. She is a prolific digital artist, painter, and printmaker living in Lawrence, Kansas. Kerry’s work is drawn from many different sources. One of these sources is the history of his family. Photographs are a major material used in the creation of his paintings. Kerry’s playful use of images and technique creates a rich texture that inspires the imagination.

Be sure to come out and see Darrell Lea, a well-known singer, guitarist, and song-writer from Lawrence, KS.

Business Name The Bourgeois Pig

Business Location 6 E. 9th St.

Jen Unekis was born in Los Angeles, California in 1964. She lived in a classic Southern California home with a pool, play house, citrus trees and a built in trampoline in the back yard. At the age of 4 her father decided quit his job at IBM to return to his roots in Kansas. The family moved to a 100 year-old farm house that had sat vacant for 5 years. Since the farm was in extreme need of repair, for the next 10 years of her life her home was a constantly changing environment. Sledgehammer in hand, life had changed from one of comfort to that of a struggling farm family. But the lack of life’s creature comforts is probably what sparked Jen’s creative spirit. Her world was 40 acres of land to explore. A graveyard of old farm machinery was one of her favorite spots.
After leaving the farm and moving to many locations, living from time to time on her family’s abandoned copper mine in the summers (and attending three different high schools in three years) she landed back in Kansas, moved to Lawrence and enrolled in KU. After studying Art and Design with an emphasis in ceramics she began creating primarily works in clay. That changed to multi-media work in 1988. Today she lives in a little yellow bungalow near the river with her daughter Adeline and husband David, where she has a painting studio. Her recent work has become a study of color with clay like texture. Using line and form to make the subtle suggestions of human form or floral elements. Her work is primarily in venetian plaster and acrylic paints. Jen was the Grand Prize winner at the 2013 Art Westport and was awarded 1st place in 2D at the 2012 Lawrence’s Art in the Park. Jen’s work has also won placement awards in the Kansas Visions show, and the LOYO show.

Avery Fowles is an artist living in Kansas City where she spends her time working, street performing as a living statue, drawing portraits of friends, and painting her apartment walls.

The paintings she creates are big and warm and are set in the spaces she finds most comfortable. Conversely her graphite and pen drawings are intimate and inspired by organic design. Both bodies of work focus mainly on the figure and contrasting patterns and textures.

Henry’s Upstairs also has a treat for you this Frosty February!

She got to paint murals, benches and wall art as well as create pieces using glass. She graduated from JCCC in 2013 and took some art classes there as well. Her art show for Final Friday shows her progression from her time in college to now.
When asked about her art Cynthia says, “I like to think of my current work as ‘recycled art.’ I take things that would otherwise be thrown away, and turn them into something visually appealing. My art includes old CD’s, wire, broken jewelry, material, beads, yarn, rubber bands, and also things from nature. I like to experiment with textures, shape and color. My goal is to create pieces that are interesting to look at, and that people have never seen before. ”

Dian Hauser is a mixed media artist living in Oskaloosa, Kansas with her husband and 14 turkeys (among other animals). She received her MFA from the University of Kansas in 2000 and has been happily making art ever since. Her artwork references stories, verbal and written, that have a metaphysical basis. Dian was the Lawrence Public Library Art Liaison until 2013 and has had the pleasure of working with many Lawrence artists. www.dianhauser.com

Leta Strom utilized traditional and modern photographic techniques to create canvas pieces that capture the charm and distinctiveness of various locales in Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Czech Republic, and Slovakia. Her photo company, “Backdoor Photo,” takes its name from the approach that Steve and Leta chose in planning their European adventure. Rather than visiting a great many large cities, they chose to enter the countries through the ‘backdoor,’ wandering along winding cobblestone streets, becoming lost in the centuries-old charm of the villages and falling in step with the daily lives of locals. It is Leta’s hope that as you view her photos, you may become lost in the enchanting appeal of these European spots. Leta Strom has been involved in the Arts and working with young people for over twenty-five years. She taught high school drama and students with special needs. Leta resides in Lawrence, Kansas with her husband, Steve, and enjoys spending time with her daughters, Lauren and Kristin.

Peggy Mohr Though new to acrylic painting, Peggy has expressed her creativity in many ways since young. Music, dance and sewing were a major part of her growing up years, yet she always wanted to paint. She transferred to KU in 1975, graduated, married and raised her children in Lawrence, KS., where she currently resides with her husband, Larry. She worked for a local water color artist for many years yet never tried painting for herself. In 2008 she divinely came across a sketch she had done of her “brother’s mind” when she was in junior high, in Southern California. This was the kick she needed to pursue art for herself. After taking various classes at the art center she made the decision to focus on painting. For her, this had been a growing process, releasing a renewed love of the arts and gratefulness to God for His faithful “nudging”. http://peggymohr.com

I use my camera as a tool to capture the subtle beauty found in the world around me as I see it. I’m particularly drawn to the interaction of light, pattern, color, and texture. My work doesn’t fit neatly into any particular category or style.

“Peterson covers a wide range of subjects with his work, but the nature of structures and the structures of nature are common threads … He focuses not so much on the objects themselves, but on focal points and resonant visual elements, so that each is as much a study in shape and symbol as a record of the thing being photographed.”

– Steve Brisendine, ArtKC365, June 26, 2011

Peterson is a graduate of the University of Kansas with a degree in Journalism. After more than 30 years working in human services and nonprofit administration
