Rachel Rudeen Bio

I am a Kansas-grown, Oregon-trained ceramic artist and photographer based in Lawrence, KS. I draw much of my inspiration from the Northwest where I was exposed to its incredible artists, scenery, and culture during my undergraduate career at George Fox University. Since moving back to my home state, I have been able to keep exploring my relationship with ceramics, allowing me to refine my skills in creating functional ware.

Some of my fondest memories have occurred around the table, sharing conversation with others over tea or coffee. More often than not, these gatherings were enriched by the handmade vessels from which we drank. A handmade mug or tea bowl has the power to spark conversation, invoke contemplation, and foster community. My joy comes from knowing that people can interact with my work and cultivate relationships, which is why I have created a series of pieces from which people can gather over a drink. I hope that these forms will be taken off the shelf and used, over and over again, for that is when my art is most effective.

This film was recently nominated for an Oscar. A panel of children will discuss the film after the screening. Please arrive early as seating is first-come-first-served and space is limited. OBSERVATION: OPTIMYSTIC

This new work evolved from a previous series on canvas that explored optical illusion and perspective, capturing the relationship between observer and art/artist. The forms, initially rendered in 2D, took on an organic, sculptural life of their own, becoming the simple building block to create larger shapes and ideas. A diversion into mathematical mysticism, these pieces represent a feedback loop, in a sense – repeated, geometric patterns, that are self-similar and familiar, natural and dynamic.

SEEDCO STUDIOS
Located within the Warehouse Arts District at 720 E 9th Street #7 in Lawrence, KS, this space is ideal for making, showing and engaging in all aspects of art. With 19 artist studios, a music recording/rehearsal operation and collaborative space/gallery, the potential for creating at all scales is practically limitless. SeedCo is envisioned as a creative factory/laboratory with each of the resident artists bringing their singular artistic identity and prowess to expand and delve deeper into conception and production. At the heart of this project is a conscious intent to transform post-industrial space into a fluent medium all its own, specifically designed to transcend temporal and spatial values and condense them to create a heightened sensory experience. A multi-disciplinary approach emphasizing cooperation, collaboration, and community involvement and encompassing elements from fine art, sculpture, graphic design and production, music and recording, fashion, construction, digital media, and street art, the scope of this endeavor is far-reaching, but the flavor is distinctly home-grown. With its placement in the center of historic redevelopment, SeedCo Studios has the chance to act as a catalyst for creative growth, not only in Lawrence proper, but radiating outward into the surrounding regional area and beyond.

Rick Mitchell

The images I’ve contributed to this exhibition were made over the course of four years and in a variety of locations and circumstances. I am attracted to subjects when the light reveals them in a compelling way– not merely by making them visible but by displaying their physical attributes to the fullest. Thus, a view of the Grand Canyon, a neon sign or markings on a studio wall are all equal as content in my mind, and equally available to an optimum visual experience. There are two portraits among this group, both made of my oldest son, Adam, in the Wakarusa Wetlands just prior to the beginning of construction of a controversial highway bypass. While these images may capture aspects of my son’s character, for me they are also lamentations for land and habitat that are being overwhelmed by human development. The portraits suggest a prayerful valediction in response to a rupture in our relationship with the living world. They also allegorize an inner-seeking that, if practiced, could enhance understanding of our moral obligation to that world. In light of frequent exploitations of Nature that threaten even our own existence, it would seem that, as a species, our hold on sanity is tenuous.

Peter Thompson

In my photographs, I am motivated by the same issues of form, structure, light and color that have occupied me for nearly 50 years of teaching and making drawings and paintings. I would like to emphasize that I have little interest in subject matter per se, and don’t share photography’s current infatuation with ‘the mundane’. I am obsessed with seeing and with making pictures, however, and my circumstances certainly would be described as ordinary.

Lori B. Gustafson
Artist Statement

My inspiration as an artist is born out of my passion for teaching,
observation of life and love of story. However, I believe that works of art are much more than expression. Art is communication. It is a visual language that transcends barriers created by geography,
politics, race, gender and society. Art has great power to influence.
To be an artist brings with it tremendous and powerful responsibility
and must be used as an unselfish discipline.

To be an artist, for me personally, it is not possible to separate the art from teaching. I feel, as an artist, that my calling is to ultimately
show others a pathway to simply see more.

Laurie Culling is a visual artist and active visual artists’ advocate, living in Lawrence. Ranging in style from realistic to abstract, her art explorations feature a variety of mediums including acrylic on canvas, mixed media on gypsum, monotypes, watercolor, pastels, hand-made paper collage, fabric and beads. Her artwork has been exhibited locally, regionally and nationally and she has received numerous awards including Lawrence’s prestigious Phoenix Award in Visual Arts (2002). Her works are in many private, public and corporate collections. Laurie is a former Lawrence Art Guild co-president and vice-president, the co-founder of the Phoenix Gallery (1982), a founding member of the F.A.N. Club (1987) and Artist for the Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center (1988). Dian Hauser is a mixed media artist living in Oskaloosa, Kansas with her husband and 14 turkeys (among other animals). She received her MFA from the University of Kansas in 2000 and has been happily making art ever since. Her artwork references stories, verbal and written, that have a metaphysical basis. Dian was the Lawrence Public Library Art Liaison until 2013 and has had the pleasure of working with many Lawrence artists. http://www.dianhauser.com

LETA STROM BACKDOOR PHOTOS During her travels with her husband Steve, Leta Strom utilized traditional and modern photographic techniques to create canvas pieces that capture the charm and distinctiveness of various locales in Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Czech Republic, and Slovakia. Her photo company, “Backdoor Photo,” takes its name from the approach that Steve and Leta chose in planning their European adventure. Rather than visiting a great many large cities, they chose to enter the countries through the ‘backdoor,’ wandering along winding cobblestone streets, becoming lost in the centuries-old charm of the villages and falling in step with the daily lives of locals. It is Leta’s hope that as you view her photos, you may become lost in the enchanting appeal of these European spots. Leta Strom has been involved in the Arts and working with young people for over twenty-five years. She taught high school drama and students with special needs. Leta resides in Lawrence, Kansas with her husband, Steve, and enjoys spending time with her daughters, Lauren and Kristin.
Peggy Mohr Though new to acrylic painting, Peggy has expressed her creativity in many ways since young. Music, dance and sewing were a major part of her growing up years, yet she always wanted to paint. She transferred to KU in 1975, graduated, married and raised her children in Lawrence, KS., where she currently resides with her husband, Larry. She worked for a local water color artist for many years yet never tried painting for herself. In 2008 she divinely came across a sketch she had done of her “brother’s mind” when she was in junior high, in Southern California. This was the kick she needed to pursue art for herself. After taking various classes at the art center she made the decision to focus on painting. For her, this had been a growing process, releasing a renewed love of the arts and gratefulness to God for His faithful “nudging”. http://peggymohr.com
