Please join us for the opening reception to meet the artist Jen, see her new work and enjoy good food and music!

“Art and life, intertwined”

Jen Unekis was born in Los Angeles, California in 1964. She lived in a classic Southern California home with a pool, play house, citrus trees and a built in trampoline in the back yard. At the age of four, Jen’s father decided to return to his roots in Kansas and they moved to a 100 year-old farm house that had sat vacant for five years and had been a wonderful home to the local wildlife. Life had changed from one of comfort to that of a struggling farm family, but the lack of life’s creature comforts is probably what sparked Jen’s creative spirit. Her world was forty acres of land to explore, full of odd objects to cherish. A graveyard of old farm machinery was one of her favorite spots.
Today, Jen lives in a little yellow bungalow near the river in Lawrence, Kansas with her daughter Adeline and husband David. She currently runs an interior decorating business out of her house and has an art studio where she creates her work.

Her recent work has become a study of color and texture working primarily in venetian plaster and acrylic paints. She strives to create a personal experience for the viewer with layers of color, texture and line. Fitting in small marks with other media to create elements that feel unexpected yet familiar and well worn.
Jen was the Grand Prize winner at the 2013 Art Westport and was awarded 1st place in 2D at the 2012 Lawrence Art in the Park. Jen’s work has also won placement awards in the Kansas Visions show, the LOYO show and the Lawrence Art Guild’s Art in the Park.

Artist Name or Exhibition Title * May Final Friday at Phoenix Gallery
Month * May
Starting Time 5:00:00 PM
Ending Time 9:00:00 PM
Business Name Phoenix Gallery
Business Website
Business Location 825 Massachusetts
Lawrence, Kansas 66044
United States
Description of Artist or Exhibition

In keeping with the theme of Buskerfest weekend in downtown Lawrence, the Phoenix Gallery is proud to present artists Thomas Sciacca, Bryan and Andrea Ring and Kelly Aaron. Lively and creative, these artists are all working with a circus theme in mind. We will also have a special music performance for the evening, Marvin and Cathy Hunt. Also, Ten restaurant in the Historic Eldridge will be providing food.

Thomas Sciacca has been a freelance illustrator since 1984. He has produced images for a range of publishers and publications including The New York Times, Bantam Books, Vintage Press, Playboy, The Chicago Tribune, GQ, Esquire, and many others. Sciacca has also taught in the design programs of the Ringling School of Art and Design, the Kansas City Art Institute, and Penn Valley Community College. Theatrically, Sciacca has designed and painted sets with Paul Mesner Puppets, The Lyric Opera, KC Rep, the Unicorn Theatre, New Theatre Restaurant, and the Lawrence Arts Center. In 2014, Sciacca collaborated with Rock Candy Boutique, on a series called Sideshow Serenade. The circus sideshow themed series involves paintings, drawings, boxes, furniture, prints, books and jewelry.

Bryan and Andrea Ring covet pieces from city streets and random locales; items like street signs and license plates. They gather inspiration from the urban jungle to the wild west, then combine their treasured findings with precious metals to create their unique style of fine art jewelry.
Bryan and Andrea met at college where they studied metalsmithing and design together. This is also where they began to combine their ideas about design, materials, inspiration, and what they wanted to do with their lives. After designing everything from products to displays for other companies, they formed a company of their own, Amuck llc.

Kelly Aaron became interested in mosaics several years ago after meeting another artist who created art from broken dishes. After taking a class from this artist, Kelly realized mosaic was the medium for her; this is a medium with no rules and endless possibilities. This, coupled with Kelly’s love of antiques, resulted in the creation of truly one-of-a-kind pieces incorporating broken dishes, buttons, beads, vintage jewelry, old tins, figurines and anything else she could get her hands on. Kelly’s tongue-in-cheek style adds another unique element to her work – rarely serious and always fun. Kelly resides in Prairie Village with her husband, writer Jason Aaron, and her sons, Brendan and Dashiell.

We are excited to feature Marvin and Cathy Hunt who will be providing our music for the evening. This Lawrence duo plays jump blues and rockabilly music, with great vocals, a guitar and fun lyrics!

TEN Restaurant “Bites” to be featured at Phoenix Gallery. Visitors to The Phoenix Gallery during May 29’s Final Friday Artwalk will get the pleasure of sampling food from the kitchen of Chef Nicholas Haxton at TEN restaurant. TEN features gourmet American-style cuisine and offers an elegant dining environment inside the historic Eldridge Hotel at 7th and Massachusetts streets.
Eldridge staff will share pro tips to dining and parking Downtown, offer small bites from its kitchen and talk recipes – without giving away Chef’s secrets! – all while in the company of great artists and great art!
The Eldridge serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, along with a legendary Sunday Brunch. Reservations can be made by calling 785-749-1005 or via Open Table.

Featuring Artwork by Chuck Watson, Aaron Riffel and Isaac Riffel
Live Jazz music during Final Friday.

Three generations of potters:

Teacher (Chuck Watson), student (Aaron Riffel), and son (Isaac Riffel) will be showing their artwork in ceramic media at the Green House Culture this month.

Chuck was teaching at Liberal High School during the early 1990′s when Aaron began his High School career (class of 1994) and began absorbing a love of clay from Chuck. It has been about 20 years since they’ve been in the classroom at Liberal High School, but their friendship has never waned.

Chuck received a B.S.Ed. & M.A. from Emporia State and studied other clay and glass work at Colorado Mtn College, Colorado Institute of Art, Seward Co. Community College, SW Oklahoma State, and KU.

He retired after 38 years of teaching at Mission Valley School, Emporia State University, Liberal High School, Seward County Community College, KCK Public Schools, and Neosho River Free School.

Aaron’s formal education has led him to a career as a System Administrator at KU, but he continues to feed his passion for clay, working in his garage studio. That passion has even rubbed off on his 10-year-old son, Isaac, who has the very same love of clay that Chuck instilled in Aaron 20+ years ago.

Dian was the Lawrence Public Library Art Liaison until 2013 and has had the pleasure of working with manyLawrence artists. http://www.dianhauser.com

LETA STROM BACKDOOR PHOTOS During her travels with her husband Steve, Leta Strom utilized traditional and modern photographic techniques to create canvas pieces that capture the charm and distinctiveness of various locales in Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Czech Republic, and Slovakia. Her photo company, “Backdoor Photo,” takes its name from the approach that Steve and Leta chose in planning their European adventure. Rather than visiting a great many large cities, they chose to enter the countries through the ‘backdoor,’ wandering along winding cobblestone streets, becoming lost in the centuries-old charm of the villages and falling in step with the daily lives of locals. It is Leta’s hope that as you view her photos, you may become lost in the enchanting appeal of these European spots. Leta Strom has been involved in the Arts and working with young people for over twenty-five years. She taught high school drama and students with special needs. Leta resides in Lawrence, Kansas with her husband, Steve, and enjoys spending time with her daughters, Lauren and Kristin.

Peggy Mohr Though new to acrylic painting, Peggy has expressed her creativity in many ways since young. Music, dance and sewing were a major part of her growing up years, yet she always wanted to paint. She transferred to KU in 1975, graduated, married and raised her children in Lawrence, KS., where she currently resides with her husband, Larry. She worked for a local water color artist for many years yet never tried painting for herself. In 2008 she divinely came across a sketch she had done of her “brother’s mind” when she was in junior high, in Southern California. This was the kick she needed to pursue art for herself. After taking various classes at the art center she made the decision to focus on painting. For her, this had been a growing process, releasing a renewed love of the arts and gratefulness to God for His faithful “nudging”. http://peggymohr.com

Description of Artist or Exhibition

Hello – I am Susan Harris.
I have always liked to make things. I remember the very first thing I made “craft-wise” was a set of reindeer heads. I used plastic ivory soap bottles and sticks for antlers, red puff for nose and googly eyes, don’t you know they were adorable? Ha Ha!
After making those little works of art, I was hooked, I grew up knitting, creating pictures with beans and corn, mosaic ashtray kits and once I made a model of a koala bear. The kit had this fuzzy stuff that you had to glue all over and I thought it was super cool! I have made wreaths, flower arrangements, painted jackets, scarecrows, elves painted on ply board, Easter baskets out of excelsior, Christmas ornaments and I can’t even remember what all, but today, you are seeing my latest endeavors.
The mosaic pieces are made of really old things, plates, can openers, marbles and all kinds of “good junk”.
The banners have some old fabric worked into almost every one and the candlesticks are all from old stuff as well.
The towels and bucking cowboys are new or course, but I like them because I did “weather” them a bit.
I grew up crafting in Henderson, Texas where I taught school to support my crafting addiction, I have been creating stuff here and there, ever since.
I followed my two wonderful daughters, who surprisingly enough, both ended up in this area.
I love Lawrence and am truly enjoying being here! It is good to be a Kansan!

With 19 artist studios, a music recording/rehearsal operation and collaborative space/gallery, the potential for creating at all scales is practically limitless. SeedCo is envisioned as a creative factory/laboratory with each of the resident artists bringing their singular artistic identity and prowess to expand and delve deeper into conception and production. At the heart of this project is a conscious intent to transform post-industrial space into a fluent medium all its own, specifically designed to transcend temporal and spatial values and condense them to create a heightened sensory experience. A multi-disciplinary approach emphasizing cooperation, collaboration, and community involvement and encompassing elements from fine art, sculpture, graphic design and production, music and recording, fashion, construction, digital media, and street art, the scope of this endeavor is far-reaching, but the flavor is distinctly home-grown. With its placement in the center of historic redevelopment, SeedCo Studios has the chance to act as a catalyst for creative growth, not only in Lawrence proper, but radiating outward into the surrounding regional area and beyond.
